Pelvic ultrasounds are non-invasive diagnostic exams that produce diagnostic images of the female pelvic organs and structures, including: the uterus, cervix, vagina, fallopian tubes and ovaries.

A female pelvis ultrasound provides the following information:

  • The presence and thickness of fluids or masses in the endometrium, myometrium, fallopian tubes, in or near the bladder
  • Length and thickness of the cervix
  • Changes in bladder shape
  • Blood flow through pelvic organs

Pelvic ultrasounds may be used to diagnose and assist in treatment of the following conditions:

  • Abnormalities in the anatomic structures of the pelvis
  • Fibroid tumours (benign growths)/masses/cysts
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Postmenopausal bleeding
  • Monitoring of ovarian follicle size for infertility evaluation
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome

Pelvic ultrasounds are also useful to monitor the position of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD).

At Fusion we offer two types pelvic ultrasound.

Transabdominal Female Pelvis

A transabdominal exam provides a wide view of the pelvic organs. This exam is often done first to give an overall view of the pelvic area and to determine any pathologies that may be present.

A transducer is placed on the abdomen and conductive gel is used to see the pelvis through or across the abdomen.

Price £150

Transvaginal Female pelvis

A transvaginal exam is capable of providing greater detail in a smaller area and is often required to hone in on any pathologies seen on the transabdominal scan.

During a transvaginal ultrasound a long, thin transducer is covered with conducting gel and a latex sheath and is inserted into the vagina. A transvaginal ultrasound is usually performed to view the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) and the ovaries. Transvaginal ultrasound also evaluates the myometrium (muscular walls of the uterus) and the fallopian tubes. A transvaginal ultrasound should not be painful but may cause some discomfort.

One of the Ultrasound scan services that we provide is ultrasound guided joint injection. The joint injection is most often carried out using ultrasound to guide the injection. A common cause of a painful joint is synovitis (inflammation of the lining of the joint). An injection of corticosteroid and/or local anesthetic medication directly into the joint can sometimes be helpful in reducing the inflammation and providing pain relief.

The guidance of the needle through ultrasound allows for safe and monitored administration of the medication, minimizes potential risks and allows for our clinicians to maximise the effects of the injection.

An ultrasound-guided steroid injection would vastly benefit anyone suffering from:

# Frozen shoulder
# Tennis elbow
# Greater trochanteric pain syndrome
# Osteoarthritis of the Knee; Hip
# Morton’s neuroma
# Carpal tunnel syndrome
# Plantar fasciitis
# Shoulder impingement; bursitis
# Acromioclavicular joint pain

Our ultrasound-guided injections provide immediate relief and effective lasting results; we can target a variety of specific areas and tailor the treatment to your specific needs. The extensive list of injections available at Fusion Radiology include:
